BANA BA LETSATSI, MAUN, BOTSWANA

In December 2002, an Irish lady founded Bana ba Letsatsi (Sunshine Children) in response to the growing number of children on the streets in Maun. She quickly identified the issue of children roaming the streets that so far had not been identified by the authorities. She set up the cornerstone for Bana ba Letsasti and started focusing exclusively on these children, picking them up off the streets and taking them to a center and reintroducing them back to their schools. BIG LIFE FOUNDATION, AMBOSELI, KENIA

The Big Life Foundation was founded by Nick Brandt and Richard Bonham in 2010. Its goal is to protect 2 million acres of wilderness in the Amboseli-Tsavo ecosystem of East Africa and to curb the significant poaching happening in this area. Since its inception, Big Life has trained and employed more than 300 rangers, set up 31 outposts, maintains 15 vehicles and has trained and successfully employed tracker dogs to hunt down poachers. THE DAVID SHELDRICK WILDLIFE TRUST, NAIROBI, KENIA

The DSWT is an organisation that is mainly involved in saving orphaned elephants by rescuing them throughout Kenya in order to reintroduce them back into the wild. The DSWT also maintains Anti-Poaching Units, mobile Vet-Units that operate either by car or helicopter. The DSWT additionally is dedicated to the protection and conservation of wildlife and habitats in Kenya and manages community outreach programs.  More…

BAPHUMELELE, KHAYELITSHA, SÜDAFRIKA

Rosie Mashale – „Rosie“ founded the  "Baphumelele Children's Home" in  1998. A Safe Haven for orphaned, displaced and destitute children. The majority of the children are HIV/Aids positive or in some other way affected by the virus.  Today the Children’s Home cares for approx. 160 children of all ages. Rosie additionally runs a soup kitchen, a pre-school for approx. 300 children, a respite center for children and adults, a halfway house for older youths and she trains social workers to monitor and assist the many child headed homes in the township (children caring for each other without an adult in the house). MENINO JESUS, MANHIÇA, MOSAMBIK (in 2011 abgeschlossen)

„Menino Jesus“is an orphanage for girls in Manhiça, approx. 78km north of Maputo. It is one of the establishments of the catholic diocese of Maputo. The orphanage is managed by the nuns of the congregation of the “Franciscan Sisters Maria Mother of Africa” (Irmãs Franciscanas de Nossa Senhora Mãe de Africa). The orphanage cares only for girls, most of whom have lost their parents due to HIV/AIDS (some are themselves infected) or other illnesses. Currently it accommodates 60 girls between the ages of 5 and 18 years. In 2011 we built a new house fort he older girls to live and study in. More…

SAVE THE ELEPHANTS, SAMBURU, KENIA

Save the Elephants (STE) was founded more than 20 years ago by the long time elephant researcher Iian Douglas-Hamilton. Save the Elephants is active in the research and monitoring of elephants, the protection of elephants together with wildlife departments, protected area managers and communities, to assist their efforts to defend elephants against ivory poachers and traffickers. STE assists in the Human Elephant Co-existence plans and generates awareness globally.  More …
